Thessaloniki Capitala Europeană a Tineretului 2014

The city of Thessaloniki has been awarded the title of European Youth Capital for 2014, after fighting off stiff competition from Heraklion, Greece and Ivanovo, Russia. The Award Ceremony took place on 18th November 2011 in Braga, the upcoming European Youth Capital 2012, in the framework of the European Youth Forum’s Autumn Council of Members. According to the panel of jurists that decided to award Thessaloniki, the city stressed the will of establishing sustainable projects for a variety of activities that address young people’s challenges by building on existing structures.

“Thessaloniki built the strongest application, which was developed together by and with young people, which is evident throughout their programme packed with creative ideas,” said Peter Matjašič, President of the European Youth Forum. Each year since 2009, the European Youth Forum has awarded a city as European Youth Capital for one year, which then showcases its youth-related cultural, social, and economic life. In the past years, the European Youth Forum has awarded the cities of Torino (2010), Antwerp (2011), Braga (2012) and Maribor (2013).

The European Youth Forum, having coordinated the selection of the European Youth Capital 2014, strongly encourages Thessaloniki in investing in, and giving space to youth and youth organisations with two years to go until their Youth Capital year begins. Moreover, the European Youth Forum has recently launched its call for applicants to become the European Youth Capital 2015.
